Unblock Drain Yourself Kingswood | When Not to Call

Most drain companies won't tell you this, but a fair number of calls we get from BS15 and BS30 postcodes didn't need a tradesperson at all. You could have sorted it yourself in twenty minutes with stuff already under your sink.

I'm not saying that to be noble. I'm saying it because you deserve an honest answer before you spend money.

The stuff you can genuinely handle yourself

Let's be clear about what falls squarely in DIY territory.

A slow kitchen sink. Nine times out of ten, that's a fat-and-food-scrap build-up sitting in the P-trap, the curved bit of pipe directly under your plughole. Unscrew the trap over a bucket, clean it out, reassemble. Takes ten minutes. You don't need a company like us anywhere near it.

A slow bathroom basin or bath. Hair. It's almost always hair, matted around the pop-up plug mechanism. Pull the plug out, clean it, job done. A zip-it tool (a few quid from a hardware shop) can drag the rest out without disassembling anything.

A gurgling toilet after heavy rain. If everything drains eventually and there's no smell hanging around, what you're often hearing is air pressure shifting in the shared drain as the system handles a surge. Watch it for a day. If it stops gurgling and flushes normally, leave it alone.

A single blocked gully in the garden. Gullies, the square plastic traps at the foot of downpipes and patio drains, block with leaves and silt constantly. Rubber gloves, a bucket, clear it by hand. Rinse it with a hose. Done.

Where to draw the line

Here's where homeowners in Hanham, Two Mile Hill, Soundwell and Cadbury Heath tend to get into trouble: they start a DIY fix and make the problem bigger, then call us anyway.

Stop and get someone in if:

• More than one fixture is slow or blocked at the same time. A single blocked trap doesn't take down your bath, toilet and kitchen sink together. That pattern points to a blockage further down the shared line, and that's not a job for a plunger.
• You've tried a plunger and a drain rod and nothing has moved. Rodding can push a soft blockage further in and compact it, or crack an already damaged pipe. If it hasn't shifted in two attempts, stop.
• There's a smell of sewage coming from outside, or water is backing up in the manhole in your garden. That's a drain survey job, not a DIY job.
• The problem keeps coming back every few weeks. A recurring blockage usually means something structural, a partial collapse, a root ingress, a bellied pipe, that no amount of plunging will touch. In Warmley Hill and Staple Hill especially, we see a lot of older clay drainage that's shifted over the decades. A CCTV survey will show you exactly what's happening rather than guessing.
• You've found or suspect the problem is in a shared sewer. Shared sewers are Thames Water's responsibility in most cases. Digging around them yourself without knowing the layout is a bad idea.

The myth that chemical drain cleaners are a shortcut

They're not. Caustic soda and gel-based drain unblockers will clear a soft organic blockage sometimes, but they don't touch grease that's solidified, they don't touch roots, and they can damage older clay and cast-iron pipework if left too long. They're also genuinely hazardous to handle.

If a chemical cleaner hasn't worked after one attempt, don't pour more in. You'll just be handing a drain engineer a pipe full of caustic chemicals to work around.

The fair caveat

I'd rather you tried the simple stuff first and didn't call us. A slow basin or a gunked-up gully isn't an emergency. But the moment you're looking at multiple blocked outlets, sewage smells, or a problem that won't shift, you're past the point where DIY saves you money. At that stage it risks making the repair more expensive.

A CCTV drain survey is far cheaper than a failed afternoon of guesswork followed by the same survey anyway.
