Burst Main or Blocked Drain Kingswood | Who to Call
Water in the wrong place in Kingswood Town Centre? Here's how to tell a burst supply pipe from a blocked drain, and exactly who to ring for each.
Water where it shouldn't be is always alarming. But there's a big difference between a burst supply pipe and a blocked drain, and calling the wrong number wastes time you might not have. If you're standing in Kingswood Town Centre watching water bubble up from a gully, pool across a pavement, or back up through a manhole, here's how to read what you're actually looking at.
The Core Difference
A supply pipe carries clean water under pressure, in. It's part of the network that delivers drinking water to homes and businesses.
A drain or sewer carries used water under gravity, out. It takes away what you flush, wash, or pour away.
They're entirely separate systems, owned by different organisations, and fixed by different people. Mixing them up costs you time and, potentially, money.
What You're Actually Seeing: Five Clues
Where is the water coming from? Bursts usually push water up from below, or spray from a pipe that's clearly under pressure. You might see a jet or a steady fountain. Blocked drains back up, they overflow. Water rises slowly from a drain opening, manhole cover, or gully.
What does the water look like? Supply water is clear. Sewage or surface water coming back through a blocked drain is not. If there's colour, smell, or debris, you're dealing with a drainage problem. If it looks like tap water, suspect the supply side.
Is it continuous? A burst keeps flowing regardless of what anyone in the building does. A drain problem gets worse every time someone flushes a toilet or runs a tap, and may ease briefly overnight when the building is quiet.
Where's it surfacing? Around Kingswood Town Centre and into BS15, drains often run under rear gardens or shared service strips. Water appearing at a manhole cover or from a gully is almost certainly drainage. Water pushing up through a lawn or paving with no obvious drain nearby is more likely a supply pipe.
Is there a drop in pressure inside? If taps inside the property suddenly lose pressure, that points to a burst on the supply side. Drains failing don't affect your water pressure at all.

Who Owns What in Kingswood
Bristol Water supplies most of BS15 to BS30. They're responsible for the supply pipe up to the boundary of your property, at which point it becomes your private supply pipe and your responsibility.
Sewers adopted by Wessex Water are Wessex's responsibility to the point they become private. Private drains serving a single property are yours. That's the bit Drainsco deals with: the private drain runs, the lateral connections, everything from your property out to the adopted sewer.
If you're not sure where the boundary is, a CCTV survey will map it.
The Smell Test (Literally)
If there's a strong smell of sewage, the supply side is almost certainly not involved. Clean water doesn't smell. If you can't identify the source but there's an unmistakable drain odour around a gully or manhole on a Warmley Hill terrace or a New Cheltenham side street, that's a drainage job. We run CCTV surveys that will show exactly where a blockage, belly, or cracked joint is sitting, and we carry the jetting kit to clear it the same visit in most cases.
A Note on Road Flooding Near the Town Centre
Kingswood High Street and the surrounding streets around Regent Street and Moravian Road sit in a low-lying area that collects surface water quickly. Flooding after heavy rain isn't always a burst or a blockage: it can be a gully that hasn't been cleared, a blocked road drain, or a culvert running slow. South Gloucestershire Council handles adopted highway drains. We handle private gullies and commercial drainage. If the flooding is on your forecourt or car park, that one's yours.

Priya Nair, CCTV survey and diagnosis specialist
Priya is the one who reads the camera footage. She handles the survey work, the pre-purchase reports and the build-over enquiries, and she will happily explain why a drain that keeps blocking almost always has a cause worth finding rather than a clear-out worth repeating.
