What to do right now, before anyone arrives
If you've decided it's an emergency and you're waiting for an engineer, here's what actually helps.
Stop adding water to the system
This is the most important thing you can do. Every litre you put down a drain upstream of a blockage has to go somewhere, and right now that somewhere is probably your bathroom floor.
Turn off dishwashers and washing machines immediately. Don't run taps unnecessarily. If there are other people in the property, tell them the same. The system is full. Don't fill it further.
Locate your stopcock if there's any risk of an overflow
If water is actively rising somewhere, find your internal stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink or near the water meter) so you can isolate the supply quickly if needed. You're not turning it off yet, but knowing where it is at 2am beats hunting for it at 2:15am with wet socks on.
Check the external manholes if it's safe to do so
Grab a torch and have a look at the inspection chambers in your garden or driveway. If the chamber nearest the house is full to the lid with water, the blockage is downstream of it. If it's empty, the blockage is between that chamber and the house. This takes two minutes and is genuinely useful information for the engineer when they arrive.
Don't poke anything into the manhole. Don't try to rod it yourself in the dark. You'll tell the engineer what you saw and they'll do the rest.
Contain the affected area
Old towels around the base of the toilet or shower tray. A bucket if water is trickling. Close the door on the affected room if you can, to limit the spread. Sewage-contaminated water carries bacteria you don't want tracked through the rest of the house on bare feet at midnight.
What not to do

- Chemical drain unblockers (the caustic soda type). At best, they soften a grease blockage slowly over several hours. At worst, they sit on top of a solid blockage and you've now got a manhole full of caustic liquid that someone has to work in safely. Don't add them to a completely blocked drain.
- Boiling water down the toilet. It won't shift a solid blockage and PVC pipework doesn't love it.
- Plunging the toilet repeatedly when sewage is already backing up. You're just redistributing the problem.
- Calling a water company emergency line when the blockage is on private pipework. They're responsible for the public sewer, not the lateral from your house to the boundary. Know the difference before you call.
